The only previous thread I could find in the forums concerning 'The Return of Doctor X' was this one. I didn't have a copy of the movie at that time.

There is no discussion of whether the film is copyright-free, but I checked before posting the movie at The U. S. Copyright Office and at The Library of Congress (which was probably redundant.) I also found the movie for sale at http://www.oldies.com/ which carries many public domain films. That's the best I could do.

I'd like to see more Bogart films posted here too.

Thank you for the follow up. The only film they had of Bogart at IA (before your film upload,which is a sweet film)was Beat the Devil.

Return of Dr X is not in the public domain

This movie is only available on 2 seperate Warner/Turner releases: a double feature of "Doctor x" and "The Return of Doctor x" and the "Hollywood's Legends of Horror" pack (Doctor X / The Return of Doctor X / Mad Love / The Devil Doll / Mark of the Vampire / The Mask of Fu Manchu)

www.oldies.com may be the distributor of Alpha video but they also sell a lot of copyright releases from all of the major studios. Being on www.oldies.com is not a sign of a film's public domain status.

The listing of copyright registrations 1912-1939 lists the film as registered under:

THE RETURN OF DOCTOR. X, First National.
1939. 7 reels.
Credits: Director, Vincent Sherman; story,
William J. Makin; screenplay. Lee Katz.
Warner Brothers Pictures, Inc.;
3Dec39; LP9261.

The USCO lists a bulk transfer of titles which lists Return of Doctor X under the same registration details. This would suggest that the copyright is still valid.

The Return of Doctor X / LP9261.

It isn't listed as a Recorded Document or Motion Picture at the U.S. Copyright Office when I search.

Found it when I searched for 'Return of Doctor X' rather than 'The Return of Doctor X'. Tricky...

I'll wait a couple of days before I delete the files in case someone comes up with new information.
